Saka Table Lamp [TOTEM Series]

Saka is a name that simply arrived while I was looking at this lamp, and it stayed. Some pieces tell you what they are called before you have a reason for it.

The lamp rises from a matte black metal foot through three ceramic forms, each thrown on the wheel and glazed by hand. The lowest is broad and soft in tone, the middle one tapers upward, and the top flares back out again, so together they make a quiet hourglass, speckled and marked with the lines the wheel leaves behind. A slim silver metal ring, almost invisible unless you look for it, separates the white from what comes next: a tall column of wood, turned on the lathe and finished in a deep yellow. When the lamp is lit, that yellow warms almost to amber just beneath the shade. Above it all sits a navy blue shade, made locally in Ontario, the same colour I chose for the Heer table lamp.

This is a one-of-a-kind piece from the Totem series. I designed it and made it entirely by hand, throwing the ceramic on the wheel and turning the wood on the lathe myself. No two pieces in this series are the same, and once this lamp is gone, it will not be made again.
